All Black Toeava out for season

The 31-year-old had only just made a comeback against Brive this past Sunday, after recovering from that same injury, which had required surgery.

The 35-times capped All Black will undergo "another surgical operation during the coming days or weeks", Clermont said on their website.

It is a bitter blow for the 'Jaunards' who have qualified for the European Champions Cup semifinals – they face Leinster in Lyon on April 23 – and are battling to reach the Top 14 play-offs.

Toeava only lasted 10 minutes of his comeback, in which Clermont were stunned 26-21 at home to Brive in a defeat that hurt their chances of getting a bye into the semifinals – the top two in the league go straight into the semifinals while the next four sides play an extra round.

His absence is an extra headache for head coach Franck Azema, who is already without France international backs Wesley Fofana and Noa Nakaitaci for the rest of the season due respectively to a ruptured Achilles tendon and torn cruciate knee ligament.
