Farrell on course for Premiership record

The New Zealand-born Van Gisbergen racked up 26 points during the 2005 final, including a try, to help Wasps to a 39-14 win over Tigers to complete his overall haul of 44.

Farrell racked up 17 points in his debut Final in 2011 as Saracens beat Leicester 22-18 for their first title. He then scored nine as his side were downed by Northampton Saints in 2013 but came back strong two years later with 18 points to help Saracens to their second Premiership title.

Wasps and Leicester Tigers are tied on four Final victories apiece with Saracens having won twice in the last five years and Harlequins, Northampton Saints, and Sale Sharks each lifting the trophy once.

Tigers have appeared in nine of the 13 finals to date so it is no surprise that it is Leicester players who dominate the statistics for most final appearances.

George Chuter and Geordan Murphy lead the way with seven starts each, while Alesana Tuilagi has six starts and one appearance from the bench.

Murphy also holds the record for most minutes played having racked up a whopping 560 minutes on the Twickenham turf throughout his Tigers' career.

The Ireland international signed off a stellar 16-year stint at Welford Road with a fourth win in the Final as Tigers beat bitter rivals Saints 37-17.

Murphy was 35 in that 2013 Final but the honour for the oldest ever starter in the showpiece event goes to Mike Catt.

The back's London Irish side were narrowly beaten 9-10 by Murphy's Tigers in the 2009 Final but Catt's age of 37 years and 241 days makes him the oldest final starter.

Catt is not quite the oldest finalist though, that honour goes to Andy Deacon, who was 37 years and 304 days when he came off the bench for Gloucester in the first ever Premiership Final in 2003.

Unfortunately he could not help his side and they were downed 3-39 by Wasps as they won their first of a hat-trick of final triumphs.

The honour for oldest captain goes to Lawrence Dallaglio who skippered Wasps in the 2008 Final at 35 years and 294 days – and experience told in the end as the London side beat Tigers 26-16 for their fourth title in six years.

Saracens' Glen Jackson, at 34 years and 218 days, became the oldest point scorer in a Premiership Final history in 2010 but his 17 points were not enough to get the win as his side were defeated 33-27 by Tigers.

Another Tiger, this time Martin Corry, claimed the record for oldest try scorer – at 33 years and 212 days – when he touched down in Leicester's 44-16 win over Gloucester in 2007, their first ever final victory.

At the other end of the spectrum, in the same game, a sprightly Ben Youngs became the youngest ever finalist when he came off the bench aged just 17 years and 249 days.

Youngs also holds the record for youngest try scorer when, at 20 years and 266 days, he touched down in the 2010 Final against Saracens, helping his side to a 33-27 victory.

Teammate George Ford became the youngest ever starter when, at 19 years and 71 days, he began the Tigers' losing effort against Harlequins in 2012.

In the same game, he also became the youngest point scorer but his 13 were not enough as Tigers went down 23-20 to Chris Robshaw's Harlequins.

Robshaw himself became the youngest Premiership Final skipper when, aged 25 years and 356 days, he skippered Harlequins to victory on their final debut.

Three players share the record for most tries in a final with Josh Lewsey, Tuilagi and Ernst Joubert each having touched down twice.

Lewsey's points contributed to Wasps' 2003 win over Gloucester while Alesana Tuilagi's brace set up Tigers' 2007 victory over the same side, but Joubert's double came in Saracens’ losing effort against Leicester in 2010.

The 2003 Premiership Final got off to a lightning quick start as Lewsey's score after just 67 seconds remains the fastest ever try.

The quickest score came quicker than that, though, with Peter Hewat knocking over a drop goal after just 19 seconds in the 2009 final as London Irish lost to Tigers.
