NEWS: Stormers flyhalf Brandon Thomson has been released from his contract with Western Province Rugby to join the Glasgow Warriors.

The 22-year-old, whose father was born in Scotland, will head to Glasgow on a two-year deal once his fellow flyhalf Robert du Preez has returned to full fitness, which is expected to be in September.

Thomson impressed during a short loan spell with the Warriors earlier this year -  he played three times for Glasgow and scored a try on his debut against Ulster.

Having been schooled in Ermelo, Thomson attended the Western Province Rugby Institute in 2014 and moved through the system well, forming part of the Western Province Under-21 side that went unbeaten in 2015 under the guidance of current Stormers head coach Robbie Fleck.

After also representing the Junior Springboks in 2015, Thomson would go on to make his Super Rugby debut for the Stormers in 2016 and has earned seven caps since.

Thomson's current Stormers teammates Huw Jones and Oliver Kebble will also join Warriors and other additions to the squad include Adam Hastings from Bath, Callum Gibbins from the Hurricanes, Lelia Masaga from the Chiefs and Samuela Vunisa from Saracens.

"The relationships I built in Glasgow was definitely a big contributing factor to going back, they are a great bunch of guys and made me feel at home right from the start," said Thomson.

"Dave Rennie is an excellent coach and has done very well with the Chiefs, so I'm super excited to have the opportunity to learn and be part of his set-up.

"The likes of Huw [Jones) and Oliver [Kebble] also being there is awesome, it's like bringing a little part of home with me, and I'm sure we'll do great together in Glasgow colours.

"The crowds at Scotstoun are absolutely amazing. To have a packed stadium week in, week out really makes playing there so exciting. I can't wait to play in front of the Warriors supporters again."

Director of Rugby Gert Smal thanked Thomson for his contributions over the last three years and wished him well in Scotland.

"Brandon's pathway through our system shows that we are identifying and developing talented players, which is encouraging.

"He still has an important role to play for us before he leaves, but this is a great opportunity for him and we wish him all the best," he said.

Western Province Rugby Group CEO Paul Zacks said that the decision to release Thomson from his contract early was taken in the players' best interests.

"This is a great opportunity for Brandon and we were not going to stand in his way. He leaves with our best wishes," said Zacks.

President of the Western Province Rugby Football Union Thelo Wakefield thanked Thomson for his contributions in his time at Newlands.

"Brandon has been a wholehearted competitor in his time with us and I am sure he will take those same qualities with him to Glasgow," he said.
