SANZAAR opts for Super bonus points

The tournament, featuring Southern Hemisphere powers New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and Argentina, will replace its four-try bonus point system with a bonus point awarded to a team finishing three or more tries ahead of its opponent.

The bonus point for losing by seven or fewer points remains unchanged.

SANZAAR chief Andy Marinos said Super Rugby had produced "some of the most exciting and complete 80-minute games in the history of the competition this season, spurred on by the introduction of the new bonus point system".SANZAAR opts for Super bonus points

"SANZAAR EXCO reviewed the bonus point system implemented into Super Rugby this year and believed it had a significant impact in rewarding the more dominant teams, created a competition for the full 80 minutes and is providing a reward system that recognises both attack and defence," Marinos said.

"Having witnessed some of the most exciting and complete 80-minute games in the history of the competition this season, spurred on by the introduction of the new bonus point system, we believe that across the SANZAAR tournaments, for the sake of the players, broadcasters and the fans, we should have consistency in terms of the tournament points system.

"We look forward to the continuation of similar, exciting and impactful rugby in the Test Matches of the 2016 Rugby Championship."

This year's Rugby Championship will also include a match played at London's Twickenham Stadium for the first time between Australia and Argentina on October 8, SANZAAR confirmed.

It will be a nominated home game for the Pumas, who will play their other home matches in Salta and Buenos Aires.

The Rugby Championship kicks off on August 20.

Competition points will be awarded in all matches on the following basis:

Win: Four points

Draw: Two points

Loss:  No points for loss of more than seven points

Bonus: One point for loss by seven points or less

Bonus: One point for three tries or more than opponent
