Pool A

South Africa 41-0 Russia

It was the perfect start to defending their 2015 Cape Town Sevens title for the Blitzboks as they looked comfortable in their opening match against Russia. There was no stopping the home side as they racked up the tries to secure a massive opening victory.

Australia 0-19 USA

The USA showed more fight and determination in their opening match of the competition to claim a morale boosting whitewash of Australia. The southern hemisphere side could not click during their 14 minutes on the field and succumbed to the unlikely defeat.

Pool B

France 14-33 Kenya

Kenya showed plenty of speed and strength in the second half to overcome France with relative ease. The match did not go all their way in the opening seven minutes but they found their groove in the closing stages to grab the important opening win.

Fiji 33-7 Japan

Japan started like a house on fire as Fiji looked out of sorts in the opening stages of the match. However, some ill-discipline saw Japan being reduced to six men and that gave Fiji the opening they needed – scoring 33 unanswered points.

Pool C

New Zealand 26-12 Argentina

Argentina only have themselves to blame for some poor work on defence that saw them hand New Zealand the victory. Argentina were threatening on attack but could not cope with New Zealand's power on attack as they failed to make their first-time tackles.

England 33-10 Canada

Canada began the match brightly as England got off to a slow start, however, England settled soon after to race to a massive lead as the game came to an end. Canada did, however, manage to grab a consolation score to keep some respectability to the score.

Pool D

Scotland 21-19 Samoa

Samoa were in control for much of the game and held the lead for long periods of time. However, Scotland's never-say-die attitude showed its face once again as they grabbed a score-levelling try in the dying seconds. The conversion was good as they snuck home at the end.

Wales 29-7 Uganda

Uganda were once again promising in their opening match of the tournament but their inexperienced showed as Wales took advantage of holes in their defence to claim the comfortable victory.
