Hong Kong 7s: Fiji bag three-in-a-row
The Pacific Islanders were ruthless on attack and pounced on every Blitzbok error to claim a comprehensive victory. Despite the defeat – the South Africans' fourth of the Series – they remain on top of the overall standings.
Australia left the tournament with the Bronze Medal after they led from start to finish in a close encounter with the United States while New Zealand managed to keep Argentina at bay to claim a narrow victory to wrap up fifth place.
Scotland proved too strong for Kenya as they claimed the Challenge Trophy while Japan claimed 13th place after coming from 7-21 behind to defeat Wales.
Fiji 22-0 South Africa
Fiji early handling error saw them knock the ball on and gave the Blitzboks a chance to attack. They did just that but failed to make the final pass that handed Fiji a chance to run the ball out from inside their 22.
South Africa continued to attack while Fiji were putting in some huge tackles. An interception inside their 22 led to a massive counter-attack. Fiji kept the ball alive and that allowed Sevuloni Mocenacagi to dot down in the corner for a 5-0 lead.
Fiji doubled their lead soon after when, after some more pressure on the Blitzboks' defence, Mesulame Kunavula rammed his way over to take a 10-0 lead into the interval.
Another handling error early in the second half gifted the ball back to Fiji and they were made to pay as Kalione Nasoko raced clear to dot down under the uprights. Vatemo Ravouvou added the extras that took the lead to 17-0 with three minutes remaining in the contest.
The result was put to bed with two minutes to go when Nasoko rounded off a blistering attack to stretch their lead to 22-0.
Australia 26-17 USA
The opening five minutes belonged to Australia as they ran at the USA on every occasion. They found reward in the second and fourth minutes to take a 14-0 lead. However, USA hit back as the half drew to a close to grab a seven-pointer of their own to trail 7-14 at the break.
The USA reduced the deficit to just two points soon after the restart but their five-pointer was wiped out by a converted Australian try, that took the score to 21-12 in Australia's favour with three minutes to play.
The USA were on the scoreboard once again in the final minute with a converted try to narrow the deficit to 19-21 with seconds remaining on the clock. Australia secured the restart and went on to score the final try of the match to claim the Bronze medal.
Argentina 7-10 New Zealand
New Zealand came out firing and took a 5-0 lead in the opening minute before the match became highly physical. Argentina were up for an arm wrestle and kept New Zealand from scoring any further points in the first half, despite being reduced to six men in the sixth minute.
New Zealand eventually stretched their lead early to 10-0 in the ninth minute but Argentina hit back with a converted try in the 11th minute to set up a tense finish. Argentina held onto possession for the majority of the final minutes but failed to make their way through New Zealand's defence.
Scotland 21-19 Kenya
Kenya flew out of the blocks to claim an early 7-0 lead but saw that lead turn into a deficit by the end of the half. Scotland bagged two converted tries to claim a 14-7 lead before Kenya hit back with an unconverted try to trail 12-14 at the break.
Scotland scored a ninth minute try that took their lead to 21-12 and managed to hold on to run the clock down and make a Kenyan comeback impossible. Kenya had the final say of the match though when they dotted down in the final play to close out the match.
Wales 21-28 Japan
Japan got a first-minute converted try to get the match off to an exciting start but Wales hit back immediately to level matters at 7-7 in the fourth minute. Japan were briefly reduced to six men and Wales took full advantage as they dotted down at the end of the half to head into the break with a 14-7 lead.
Wales continued that momentum into the second half as they stretched their lead to 21-7 with another converted try in the 10th minute and then came the Japanese comeback.
Three converted tries in the final two minutes – the last coming in the final play of the game – helped the Japanese side stage a dramatic come-from-behind victory.
