"Nick brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this critical role," Stephenson said.

"Nick has an eye for talent, strong relationships in Australian and international rugby and has a fine reputation for implementing quality rugby programs,"

Ryan has a track record of establishing and growing quality rugby programs during a career that has included coaching and management roles with Sydney University Rugby Club, Harvard University Rugby Club, Naas Rugby Club in Ireland, Fijian national team and Rebels as a recruitment manager.

The appointment continues the rejuvenation of the Rebels’ rugby program, which will include the recruitment of a new head coach, new head of performance and rebuilt squad ahead of the 2018 Super Rugby season.

In his new role as General Manager – Professional Rugby and Pathways at the Melbourne Rebels, Ryan will oversee the club’s re-energised football department and responsible for the delivery of on-field success for Victorian rugby community across the pathways program.

"To get this opportunity is both very humbling and exciting," Ryan said.

"I am looking forward to developing a strategy to build a sustainable and strong rugby program that has great connections and relationships across all levels of the sport in Victoria, including the schools and clubs to make them feel connected and engaged to the Rebels program.

"For the Rebels to be successful it has to be aligned in both strategy and relationships, and I am enthused about working with management, our partners and members, as well as the on-field staff and squad to develop a plan that unites the club with a purpose to achieve success in 2018 and beyond.”

The Rebels will finalise the recruitment for the remaining coaching and on-field positions over the coming weeks.
