The Bulls' win over the Sharks in Durban made sure the Pretoria-based side jumped into second place in the South African conference log.

Fresh from a bye, John Mitchell's side produced a perfect start as they scored three unanswered tries for a commanding 21-3 lead after just 26 minutes.

The running rugby and solid defence made sure they side outscored the Sharks six tries to one.

Bulls fullback Warrick Gelant stole the show with his hat-trick of tries, while Springbok flyhalf Handre Pollard – along with scrumhalf Ivan van Zyl – orchestrated the side's attack.

"You try and put anxiety into the home team as quickly as you can, and I think we did that well.

"Then the conditions played a part as well. We always thought that we might have to go to our plan B with the rain.

"I was particularly pleased with how the drivers of the game Handre Pollard, Ivan van Zyl and Warrick Gelant managed the conditions.

"I think, we got a lesson in Christchurch in heavy rain by playing too much rugby in the middle of the field. [And Saturday] we looked to exploit space on the edge. We just felt there were opportunities in their [Sharks'] backfield,"

The Bulls have secured back-to-back wins over the South African opposition. First a stylish 33-23 win over the Stormers at Loftus and then a convincing 40-10 win over the Sharks.

"We still have a long way to go‚" Mitchel admit when asked about his side's recent success.

"At least we are starting to see a blueprint where there is confidence and where there is understanding.

"I think we are starting to win hearts and minds of the fans which is important because they have gone through a lot of sacrifice and hard times. At the end of the day, we have to create something that is bigger than ourselves.

"If we can continue to fight and play with that type of spirit we will make the fans proud,"
