SQUAD ANNOUNCEMENT: The Lions have bolstered their squad significantly for their four-match Australasian Super Rugby tour.

The Lions face the Waratahs in Sydney on Friday.

They then take on the Reds (Brisbane), Hurricanes (Wellington) and the Highlanders (Dunedin) on consecutive weekends.

Regular captain Warren Whiteley is back in the mix along with centre Springbok Rohan Janse van Rensburg.

Top of the list of new additions is scrumhalf Nic Groom, who left English club Northampton Saints with immediate effect to return to his native South Africa.

The 28-year-old No.9 arrived at Franklin's Gardens in 2016 and quickly established himself in Saints' starting line-up, making 51 appearances in the Black, Green and Gold jersey in total and scoring seven tries.

Groom linked up with the Lions earlier this month.

Groom will be with the Lions until October 31, 2019.

Lions' first-choice scrumhalf Ross Cronje is currently struggling with a rib injury and he is set to be out of action for a lengthy period and won't be part of the tour.

Groom previously played in Super Rugby for the Stormers, notching up 57 caps for the Cape side. Groom also has 69 caps for Western Province.

He was also a Currie Cup winner with Western Province in 2012 and 2014, while he also has one appearance for South Africa 'A' to his name.

Other additions to the tour squad include Jacobus Adriaanse, Robin Coetzee, Ashlon Davids, Andries Ferreira, Rohan Janse van Rensburg and Warren Whiteley.

Players who played in the win over the Stormers earlier this month - before last week's bye - are Corne Fourie, Marco Jansen van Vuuren and Howard Mnisi.

Wing Aphiwe Dyantyi has also not recovered from his injury and will also miss the month-long trip.
