UCT-Ikeys stun Tuks

The defeat sees the reigning champions remain at the bottom of the log with a mere two points. The Pretoria side has to win all their remaining matches if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The other significant result of the round is Wits' 30-all draw to table-toppers Maties.

The log leaders remain unbeaten thus far in the competition, nonetheless, their aura of superiority has truly been dented.

While NWU-Pukke and UJ secured comfortable wins over Madibaz and Shimlas, respectively.

UCT 23-13 UP-TUKS

UP-Tuks came out of the blocks firing in the first half with the men from Pretoria getting onto the scoreboard first. The UCT defence was resolute in the opening half, keeping UP-Tuks at bay until  UP-Tuks fullback broke through the line to score.

David Manuel's men held their lead well before conceding a try through UCT captain Josh Moon which was converted by wing Karl Martin.

UCT flank Xaba Kuyenzeka scored moments later which marked the end of UP-Tuks lead.

UCT outside centre Liam Furnis scored the only 7-point try of the game extending the lead to 23-13.

Wits 30-30 Maties

Maties showed great intent at the start of the game by putting the hosts on the back foot with an early try thanks to wing  Edwill van der Merwe. The visitors continued to put the Wits under pressure and managed to run in two additional tries to take the score to 17-0.

Wits slowly got into the game and were rewarded with their first try through fullback Tyron Green, who managed to dot down in the corner.

Just before the break, Wits narrowed the deficit to just three points with seven-pointer from inside centre AJ Van Blerk. Flyhalf Chris Humphries added the extras.

As the second half commenced, Maties took control of the match. They added another try to their tally to extend the lead to 24-14.

With 10 minutes left on the clock the men form Stellebosh were awarded with two penalties before Wits scored a try.

Just nine points separated the sides and it looked like MAties would have bagged the win, however in the dying minutes Wits' resilience made sure they score a seven-point, which was converted, for the draw.

The first half was dominated by Pukke, the side with most of the possession leading 14-5 at the end of the half with tries from Louis van der Westhuizen and Dean Gordon, respectively.

The home side only try came via outside centre, Siphumelele Msutwana.

The second half was much of the same, with Pukke adding tries from Dean Stokes, Tiaan Bezuidenhout and Chriswill September.

Shimlas 12-49 UJ

Flyhalf Kobus Engelbrecht opened the scoreboard for UJ in the 11th minute with a penalty kick. Shimlas’ flyhalf had an opportunity in the 14th minute to level the score with a penalty kick from the 10-metre mark but was unsuccessful.

Instead, UJ extended the lead with a try from scrumhalf Bradley Thain,  Engelbrecht added the extras, 12-0.

Shimlas crossed the line in the 31st minute after wing Athi Halom went over in the corner to trail 5-15.

Just before the break, UJ were reduced to 14 men with debutant Seun Maduna red-carded for a dangerous tackle on flank Janco Cloete.

Despite being a man down, UJ extended their lead as Thain bagged his brace, 24-5.

In the second half, UJ kept their intensity and added three additional tries. While Shimlas managed to score a consolation try through wing Francois Agenbag, which was converted by Naude.
