France then beat Fiji 31-16 in Auckland and Australia sent Ireland packing 33-15 in Sydney. Wales claimed the last semi-final place with a 16-3 win over England in Brisbane.
Campese came to the fore for Australia in their semi-final versus France in Sydney. A rampant Campese broke the world record by scoring his 25th career try to better Scot, Ian Smith’s 24, which had been the record for 54 years.
However, France went on to upset the co-hosts with a 30-24 victory as Blanco scored a famous try before Camberabero converted.
The All Blacks trampled Wales 49-6 in Brisbane in the second semi-final, producing eight tries.
Wales’ Huw Richards received the first red card in RWC history after being dismissed for throwing punches at Gary Whetton.
The Wallabies were again outdone in the third place play-off at Rotorua International Stadium, where Wales walked away winners with the score 22-21. Wallaby flanker David Codey was sent off after four minutes and 32 seconds to record the fastest ever RWC dismissal.
