Bok record awaits Deon Fourie
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Stormers stalwart Deon Fourie could become the oldest player to make a Springbok debut next month.
Fourie is one of eight uncapped players that have been named in South Africa’s 43-man squad for the upcoming international season – which will feature the July series against Wales, the Rugby Championship and the Year-end tour.
Leading Western Province to a Currie Cup title in 2012 in the Allister Coetzee era, the openside flank returned to Cape Town after spending seven years in France plying his trade at Lyon and Grenoble.
Since he rejoined the Stormers at the start of the United Rugby Championship season, Fourie has become an integral part of John Dobson’s set-up.
The utility forward, who can play at hooker and openside flank, has heaps of experience and has helped the Stormers claim the South African Shielf and reached the URC Final.
His work rate is world-class, dominating the breakdowns and putting in immense tackles – making him one the standout performers in the URC.
It seems like his second act had done him a world of good and his hard work had been rewarded with a call-up in the Springbok squad.
At the age of 35, Fourie is set to become the oldest player to make his Bok debut, should he get a shot in the Green and Gold jersey.
Fourie’s Bok debut means that he will overtake Deon Lotter, who played his first Test at the age of 35 years and eight months and 23 days old in 1993 as a flank.
He will be 35 years, nine months and seven days when the first Test against Wales gets underway on July 2.

“Deon [Fourie] was actually busy getting stitches when [coach John Dobson] mentioned it in our team meeting after the game,” Stormers captain Steven Kitshoff told reporters in the wake of the 17-15 win over Ulster.
“I am extremely proud.
“He deserves the opportunity to be in the squad and be involved in that setup. He is such a hard worker, such a professional, and such a good team man.
“A lot of credit to him, he has had an exceptional season. His experience, talent, hard work and sacrifice means a lot to the Stormers and hopefully, it will for the country [too].”
Aside from Fourie, Stormers stars Warrick Gelant and Evan Roos have also been included in Jacques Nienaber’s squad following their URC performances.
“It’s important for us to produce Springboks and be seen as a pathway [to the Boks] given where we were as a union a while ago,” Stormers coach John Dobson said.
“I know Warrick is not new, but he was out of the frame. It’s brilliant. I am thrilled for Warrick and I am sure he is absolutely delighted. I am thrilled for all of them.”
Stormers are set to host the Bulls in the URC final on Saturday at Cape Town stadium.
