Ill-discipline frustrates Lions coach

CURRIE CUP REACTION: Lions coach Mziwakhe Nkosi believes his team’s lack of discipline played a huge part in their 36-48 defeat to the Western Province on Saturday.

The youthful Lions team showed great attacking intent scoring five tries in the 12-thriller in Cape Town.

However, despite their positive running rugby, it was the lack of discipline which left coach Nkosi frustrated.

“To say our discipline was terrible is actually an understatement,” Nkosi told reporters after the match at the Cape Town Stadium.

“The penalty count was 16 to 6 at some point and at any level of the game, you are not going to win a game regardless of the merits of those penalties,”

He added: “We also allowed them [WP] to score points four times after we scored.

“Take away those 20 points and the game would’ve looked different,”

Asked about his overall review on the team’s performance Lions captain Asenathi Ntlabakanye said: “Our mauls really worked well for us and I think we should’ve used it more often.

“What really didn’t’s work for us was our kick-off receives – it is an area that we need to improve,”

Having scored three tries from an effective maul courtesy of the pack, the prop bemoaned the lack of scrums.

“I feel like if there were more scrums we would have had an upper hand,” Ntlabakanye said.

“What we have done with the mauls was an example of what we could have done in the scrums,”

The Lions host the Pumas on Wednesday at Ellis Park.
