SARU breaks their silence on Jurie Roux saga

BREAKING NEWS: South African Rugby Union CEO Jurie Roux is continuing the battle to clear his name in the dispute with the University of Stellenbosch.

SARU on Tuesday finally broke their silence on the saga.

Roux, in December, lost his appeal and was ordered to personally pay back more than ZAR37-million to the University of Stellenbosch.

Roux was ordered to repay the huge sum of money – which an arbitrator found he had misappropriated from the Stellenbosch University, between 2002 and 2010.

In 2013, when Roux was at the head of the Stellenbosch Rugby Club (Maties), the audit firm KPMG submitted a preliminary report to the university which found that Roux had manipulated the finance system to channel millions of unbudgeted expenditure into the rugby club.

Roux held senior positions in the university’s finance department and had been accused of manipulating the electronic accounting system.

SARU has so far been mum on the matter.

On Tuesday SARU advised the media that a review of the outcome of the appeal into the arbitration hearing between Roux and his former employer remains ongoing.

“The legal process between Roux and the University of Stellenbosch continues following the filing of an application on March 3 in the Western Cape Division of the High Court for a review and setting aside of both the final arbitration award as well as the award of the appeal tribunal against him,” SARU said in a statement.

“Although SARU is not a party to the case, we understand the public interest in the matter considering Roux’s position as CEO of SARU.

“SARU has sought and received the input from an eminent legal team throughout this matter which is currently considering the recent developments.
