Former Rugby League star commits to Wallabies' World Cup cause

NEWS: Wing Marika Koroibete became the latest Wallaby to commit his future to Australian rugby in a new deal that will take him through to at least the World Cup next year in Japan.

The 26-year-old former Rugby League star has become a mainstay of the Australian team with his aggressive style in attack and defence, notching five tries from his 14 caps so far.

“It’s really good to sign for one more year with the Melbourne Rebels and Rugby Australia. I’m already looking forward to it as I’m really loving my rugby at the moment,” he said.

“It’s a massive year next year. We have a couple of new signings and I really want to do well at the Rebels and try to play consistent rugby.

“Then hopefully go from there, get picked for the World Cup. It really would be a dream come true.”

Koroibete’s decision to stay in Australia follows a similar move by young lock Izack Rodda on Wednesday, who signed a new two-year deal with the Queensland Reds.

The experienced Matt Toomua has also opted to return to the Rebels next season from English club Leicester, as the Wallabies World Cup squad begins to take shape.

Australians based abroad are generally unable to represent their country, although the rules were relaxed in 2015 for senior players.

Those who have pulled on a Wallabies jersey more than 60 times and have held a professional contract with Australian rugby for at least seven years can now play abroad and for the national team.
