Their financial needs are urgent, given that payday has come and gone for the 50-odd unpaid people at the Kings.

Donations will be distributed in equal parts among the players and staff to give them some money to buy food and meet their basic needs.

SEU IS the trade union representing the non-playing staff in rugby AND has called for better corporate governance following the liquidation of the Southern Kings.

Van Straaten, capped 21 times by his country, played for the Bulls and Stormers in Super Rugby, Leeds and Sale Sharks in Europe – as well as a host of first-class games for the SWD Eagles, Falcons and Griquas in domestic rugby.

In all, he featured in more than 150 games from 1994 to 2001.
