The New Zealander – fresh from steering Scarlets to a first European Champions Cup semifinal in a decade – is seen as one of the favourites to step into the void his compatriot Gatland will leave after next year's World Cup.

He was linked with the Wales job over the weekend.

However, Pivac tried to shrug off the speculation, despite previously saying he would "seriously consider" the job.

"It was nothing formal… just discussions around my contract here [at Scarlets]," he said of the talks with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU).

"As you'd expect, I'm sure most coaches at the highest level in Wales would have had conversations.

"But there has not been a formal interview."

Two-time British and Irish Lions coach Gatland, 54, will have been 12 years in the job by the time he steps down.

Meanwhile, Pivac revealed Scarlets had held talks with former star wing George North, but despite having first refusal would not be re-signing him.

The 25-year-old is expected to make a decision imminently on which of the Welsh regions he will join on a national dual contract when he leaves Northampton Saints at the end of the present campaign.

"We have signed a back three player [Cheetahs fullback Clayton Blommetjies] and we're only signing one," Pivac said.

"We haven't been informed where George is going by anybody – I think everybody's still waiting – but you can only wait so long and we have signed a player in the back three."
