Administrator to aid troubled Border

The South African Rugby Union has appointed an administrator to assist the Border Rugby Union normalise its affairs.

Mr Monde Tabata, an independent member of the SARU Executive Council, who is resident in East London, will fill the role.

The on-going dispute between the Union and their commercial partner has hampered the regions finacial stability and it is hoped that Tabata will be able to steady yhe ship.

“SARU has sent a number of delegations to East London to assist them in finding common ground for the benefit of the rugby-playing and supporting public in the region,” said Jurie Roux, the CEO of SARU.

“That outcome has not yet materialised with the result that the smooth operation of Border’s affairs has been effected. SARU has the constitutional right to appoint an administrator in certain circumstances but this decision was taken in discussion and with the agreement of both parties. We all want the one thing above all, a competitive and viable Border Rugby Union as a member of SARU.

“Mr Tabata’s appointment is only a temporary one and he will withdraw once the relationship between Border and its commercial partner has been resolved.”

Mr Tabata, 53, was elected as an independent member of the Exco following SARU’s restructure at the beginning of 2011. He previously served as an independent on SARU’s Audit & Risk and HR & Remunerations committees.

Mr Tabata said: “I have spent a considerable amount of time working with the Border structures over recent times in my role at SARU and am familiar with the issues. My main focus in the first instance will be on sorting out Border’s finances and giving as much as assistance as possible to Border’s Vodacom Cup team.”
