Falcons retain Argentinean Tiesi

Gonzalo Tiesi and Matt Thompson have penned new deals at Newcastle Falcons as the announcements continue in the build-up to this Sunday's Premiership clash with Worcester Warriors.

Argentina international centre Tiesi, 28, has signed a two-year extension, while club stalwart Thompson, 31, has committed for a further year.

Tiesi, who joined the Falcons last autumn, has been in fine form for Dean Richards' men of late to establish himself as a first team regular.

Capped 37 times by the Pumas, Tiesi is the second Argentine in as many weeks to pledge his future to the North East club after fellow countryman Juan Pablo Socino signed on the dotted line for next season.

"Newcastle Falcons is a big club and I have been impressed with Dean's vision for the future,” said Tiesi.

"The  Premiership is the most competitive league in Europe. Newcastle and the North East in general is a great place to live – the whole region is passionate about sport and I'm excited at the challenges that lie ahead for the club.”

Meanwhile, hooker Thompson, now into his testimonial year after making more than 200 appearances for the club, has extended his stay on Tyneside.

"Newcastle Falcons is a club that is very much close to my heart, and I didn't have to think twice about re-signing,” said the Newcastle-born front-rower.

"There is a fantastic blend of both youth and experience in the squad at the moment, and that bodes well for the future as the club looks to move to the next level."

"There is a great atmosphere in the dressing room at present and I can't wait to get back out onto the field.”
