Pukke excape with narrow win over UJ

The win could not come at a better time for the men from Potchefstroom as the remained at the fifth spot – four points clear of UJ in the sixth position.

Maties continued with their dominance as they recorded a fourth consecutive win with a 75-12 demolition on CUT in Stellenbosh

While Wits managed to produced a very narrow victory over a brave Madibaz and a strong second half display helped Shimlas edge out UCT  in Cape Town.

NWU-Pukke 18-15 UJ

NWU-Pukke kicked off the game and within the first two minutes managed to get the first points on the board through a successful penalty by Schalk Hugo. After six minutes, UJ were awarded their first penalty and Jeanluc Cilliers was able to equalise, leaving both teams tied at 3-all.

Minutes later the hosts pointed to the posts again – and Hugo slotted over the three-pointer for the lead.

UJ managed to find the try line through Jaco Fourie, but after a TMO referral, the try was disallowed due to a forward pass. UJ’s misfortune continued when Cilliers was unable to convert a penalty.

NWU extended their lead when they finally broke the defence for a try thanks to Evardi Boshoff. Hugo added the extras for the 10-point lead.

Before the break, the hosts were again visiting the opposition's try-line. This time Dean Gordon dived over in the corner for the 18-3 lead.

In the second stanza, UJ found themselves with more headaches as two players left the field on stretchers. However, it seems to ignite a new urgency within the Johannesburg side as captain Jannes Snyman finally got the visitors' first try.

NWU were the first team to use their Power Play, opting to send off Jan-Louis le Grange and Austic-Marc Davids, but were unable to get any further ahead during the three minutes. While UJ used their Power Play next and sent off Tapiwe Mafura and Nkosana Mathaba. During the three minutes, Adriaan Bester found the try line for UJ and Jeanluc Cilliers successfully converted, leaving UJ trailing by only 3 points.

In the dying seconds of the game UJ almost got the breakthrough they needed through a try, but for the second time, TMO referral confirmed that no try was scored, which handed Pukke the win.

Maties 75-12 CUT

The hosts had a terrible start. Constant handling errors and a mounting penalty count saw them trailing 12-0 after 15 minutes of play. CUT, on the other hand, made scoring look easy as fullback Dimitrio Tieties and wing Masego Toolo got their names on the scoresheet, respectively.

However, heading into the first strategy break the ever-reliable inform Duncan Saal instigated his side's comeback with a try.

Maties started to hit their strides and took the lead after  30 minutes through a Marno Redelinghuys try.

By halftime, Maties had put their horror show behind them and were well and truly on course for their fourth victory of the campaign.

Edwill van der Merwe scored a try on the stroke of halftime while inside centre Chris Smit scored within the first minute of the second half which truly took the wind out of CUT's sails.  

Eighth-man Redelinghuys rounded off his hat-trick for Maties in the 67th minute.

While tries from Brendon Nell and Stephan Streicher concluded the win for Maties.

Madibaz 29-32 Wits

Madibaz took a narrow first-half lead of 20-18, through tries from Justin Hollis and replacement Ruben Le Roux. While flyhalf Simon Bolza kept the scoreboard ticking with two conversions and two penalties.

Wits managed to produced two tries from Constant Beckerling and a seven-point try from Daniel Kapepula in the first half. 

Both sides took their Power Plays in the first half but neither side managed to capitalise on their two-man advantage.

Wits came out in the second half on a mission but couldn't convert all their possession besides a solitary try from Cecil Conradie to lead 23-23 before the second strategy break.

They came out strong to score another seven-point try with the conversion to lead 32-20 before Madibaz came back with a seven-point try of their own.

Madibaz put up a brave first, however, Wits' defence was just too good for the hosts, who have yet to secure a win this season.

UCT-Ikeys 27-32 Shimlas

Just as he did in the previous match, UCT’s Nyasha Tarusenga, scored an early try, putting the hosts in an early 5-0 lead. Minutes later Karl Martin capitalised on a penalty and extended the lead to 8-0.

As the match unfolded Shimlas started to gain momentum and soon scored a seven-pointer through wing Xamlashe Sango.

Athenkosi Halom was stamping his name on the game, and it wasn’t long before Shimlas’ other wing had his name on the scoresheet as well. Vistors led, 14-8.

Just before the break, UCT took the 15-14 lead.  UCT’s powerful hooker, Cuan Hablutzel crashed while a conversion by Karl Martin handed the hosts the advantage heading into the tunnel.

Just two minutes into the second half and UCT were firing on all cylinders again. A seven-pointer by the lanky Duncan Saffy extended the lead to 22-14.

But Shimlas were desperate for a victory and the final quarter saw the visitors in the driver seat as tries by Ayabonga Oliphant and Carel Coetzee sealed the win.
