Wiese: Tighthead a big Bok concern
The Springbok front row has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons in the past fortnight. And World Cup-winning Springbok Kobus Wiese expressed his concern after South Africa's two opening Rugby Championship Test matches against Argentina.
After slip-sliding their way to victory (13-6) at a muddy Loftus Versfeld, the Boks scrambled to a fortuitous 33-31 win at a sunny Estadio Padre Ernesto Martearena this past weekend.
If the South African front row's problems were not clear enough in Pretoria, their shortcomings were highlighted in spectacular fashion when they were shunted backwards repeatedly in Salta – at one stage an alarming 10 metres.
This raised the questions: Do the Boks have the fire power to win the World Cup in England next year and what are the biggest concerns?
We posed those questions to the legendary lock forward, Wiese, who famously told his Bok teammate and good friend Balie Swart at the 1995 World Cup: 'You can go forward, you can go sideways, you can go up or you can go down. But you will not come backwards.'
It was followed by a series of legendary scrums in which the Boks held of the powerful French pack to win the game and advance to the World Cup[ Final, in which they beat the All Blacks 15-12.
