Finals statistically compared

NPC and Currie Cup

There were two big finals in the Southern Hemisphere – the NPC in Auckland and the Currie Cup in Pretoria. We look at some statistical comparisons between the two.

They were very different matches.

The NPC final, between Auckland and Otago, was played in a gentlemanly fashion with lots of running and passing. The Currie Cup final, between the Blue Bulls and the Cheetahs, was played brim full of passion which did not always stay pent up. The one was a game, the other warfare. The one was light entertainment compared with the other's drama – the one dessert, the other defintely a meat course.

The NPC match had a clear-cut winner, the Currie Cup final was desperate till the final whistle.

Just as a matter of interest, there was a white team against a blue team in each match and the whites won on each occasion,. The referees colour-code teams. In Auckland, Auckland were white, Otago blue. In Pretoria, Cheetahs were white, Blue Bulls blue.

The nature of the game plays a part in statistics. The match between the Blue Bulls and the Cheetahs was much closer. The weather plays a part. For both matches the weather was fine. In Auckland it had rained. In Pretoria it was hot. The Auckland match was played at night, the Pretoria match in late afternoon.
