IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Sharks captain Lukhanyo Am has outlined what his team need to do in order to secure a Rainbow Cup final spot.

The reality is Sharks need to secure a bonus-point win over the Bulls if they want to advance to the final.

This means they will have to score four tries and at the same time deny the Bulls a losing bonus point.

Should the Bulls even secure one log points, the Pretoria will be crowned champions and will head to Italy to face Benetton in the Pro14 Rainbow Cup final.

While the urgency for a bonus-point win is certainly Sharks’ main focus, Am has warned his team not to get to adventurous and urged them to play ‘smart rugby’

“This is a big game and a lot at stake, so we try to prepare as much as we can to get the win,” Am said.

“I don’t think we will shy away from our DNA and our style of play, but the Bulls do come with different threats so we’ll look to find the balance and execute as well as we can.

“Think it will be one of those games where you must not chase bonus points and tries but rather stick to the processes.

“So, as I mentioned we’ll have to balance playing running and flashy with being smart and tactical and playing in the right areas of the field.

“We know the Bulls are a very disciplined side so we have to be smart.”

Am along with other Springboks players missed last weekend’s match against the Lions.

But despite their absence, the Sharks still managed to produce a win which is a major confidence boost for the Durban side.

“Last week’s away win against the Lions proved the depth we have in our squad, the energy the guys bring when they are backed by the coach,” Am said.

“They did an amazing job to win away from home to give us a chance of making the finals.

“Those of us coming back into the team will certainly do our best to continue the good work of the win against the Lions, and if we do make the final, we back our guys to go all the way.”
