The 38-year-old fullback Aplon has suffered a season-ending knee injury during Friday’s 17-19 defeat to the Cheetahs during the Super Rugby Unlocked Round two clash in Bloemfontein.

The Bulls revealed that Aplon tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), and will undergo surgery on Wednesday.

The surgery means that Aplon, who joined the Bulls from Japanese club Toyota Verblitz in May,  is expected to be sidelined for a period of six to nine months.

The news is a huge blow for the Bulls, given the former Stormers star has been one of the standout performers in Jake White’s side.

The Bulls will face the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.
