Premiership reveal points decisions for cancelled matches

NEWS: Premiership Rugby have announced how points will be awarded for the Newcastle Falcons v Leicester Tigers and Bath v London Irish games which were cancelled over the weekend.

Both games were cancelled due to small outbreaks of COVID in the Leicester and London Irish camps.

And Premiership Rugby have announced that Newcastle have been awarded four points and Leicester two following the cancellation of their Round Four match. The game, scheduled for Boxing Day, was cancelled after the Tigers returned a small number of positive tests following the latest round of PCR testing.

As a result a large portion of the squad, who had not tested positive, were also ruled out of the game due to contact tracing.

The Tigers’ training ground was then closed in order to try prevent a further outbreak of coronavirus at the club.

With the Tigers unable to fulfil the fixture, Premiership Rugby have now reached a decision on how to award the match points.

A Premiership Rugby spokesperson said: “Following Leicester Tigers’ inability to fulfil their Gallagher Premiership Rugby Round Four fixture against Newcastle Falcons as a result of Covid-19 the Falcons have been awarded the win and four league points.

“Leicester Tigers shall be deemed to have lost the match but awarded two league points. The match score shall be recorded as 0–0.

“The health and safety of players, staff, management, officials and supporters is our only priority, so the correct decision was taken to call the game off.”

Premiership Rugby have also awarded Bath four points and London Irish two following the cancelling of their fixture.

Like Leicester, London Irish saw their training group closed after some squad members return positive tests. In addition, since testing took place on Monday 21st December, London Irish has had players [who had returned negative results] experiencing symptoms. These players were also isolated.

London Irish’s training ground has reopened on Monday for further testing.

“London Irish shall be deemed to have lost the match but awarded two league points. The match score shall be recorded as 0–0.

“The health and safety of players, staff, management, officials and supporters is our only priority, so the correct decision was taken to call the game off.”
