South African prop to leave Western force

NEWS: The Western Force confirmed that club stalwarts Marcel Brache and Chris Heiberg are moving onto the next chapter of their careers.

With a combined 116 Force caps and 15 seasons between them, the influential duo played instrumental roles in recent years through their undeniable professionalism, commitment and dedication to the jersey on and off the field.

Renowned as an outstanding clubman, person and player, Brache departs the Force after eight seasons with 70 Force caps to his name, multiple Force Man of the Year awards and a lasting legacy as a key figure in building the strong team culture that the club is synonymous with.

With 23 Test caps and a World Cup campaign with the United States, Brache has made a concerted effort to share his experience and wisdom to the benefit of the entire squad. He will be joining up with the national team for their upcoming Test series.

Having also represented Cottesloe on numerous occasions throughout the years, the utility back has had a profound impact on the broader rugby community here in WA.

Another remarkable clubman who has always put the team first since arriving at the Force in 2014, Heiberg will be moving on to the next stage of his career after 46 appearances for the club.

Heiberg’s work ethic and willingness to help those around him, especially the younger players, has been invaluable during his seven seasons with the Force and with Palmyra as well.

Having returned to the Force in 2018 following a one-year stint with Southern Kings, Heiberg has been a core member of the squad and part of the club’s resurgence in World Series Rugby, Global Rapid Rugby and most recently on the Super Rugby stage.

A front row specialist with a never-say-die attitude, the South African prop has enjoyed a fantastic time at the club, which included an NRC title and being named Force Man of the Year in 2019. Heiberg is set to play his final game for the Force against the Bay of Plenty on July 16 at HBF Park.

Head of rugby Matt Hodgson is full of praise for the pair.

“Marcel and Chris will be missed and most certainly remembered for their exceptional contributions to the club in the face of adversity,” Hodgson said.

“They are both exemplary people and professionals who will forever remain a part of the Force family. We wish them all the very best for the future.”
