VIDEO: The Sharks player with 'the most potential in the world'

REACTION: Sharks coach Joey Mongalo believes hooker Fez Mbatha has the potential to represent the Springboks at a World Cup one day.

Mbatha produced a man-of-the-match performance in the Sharks’ 32-16 win over the Griffons in a Currie Cup Round One clash in Durban on Saturday.

The 23-year-old was a key figure in powerful driving mauls and he scored two tries. He was also part of a strong Sharks scrum that gave the Griffons huge problems.

“Fez has got the most potential in the world,” said Mongalo.

“Whenever I look at him, I think about the World Cup in 2027.

“If he gets his stuff right and he keeps working on his throwing, his conditioning and playing then there is no reason why he can’t become a future Springbok.”

Meanwhile, Mongalo praised his team’s character in the second half after a poor showing in the first 40.

The Sharks were down 0-10 halfway through the first half before going into the break at 10-13.

However, the Sharks outscored the Griffons by 22 points to three in the second half to end up comfortable winners in the end.

“I am delighted. I thought that we did well and showed good character to come back in the second half,” said Mongalo.

“I am not surprised. We spoke about how we are going to take some time to get cohesion and connection in the game and it took us about 40 minutes.”

Mongalo also had some strong words for his players during the half-time break.

“We used some interesting language to get them up, but it was good for them to respond.

“I thought the decision-makers responded really well and then the rest of the guys followed well.

“They must take credit for their ability to change the game around. It takes character to do that.”
