The Newlands Stadium has been making the headlines for the last two years.

Whether it was the unfavourable stand-off between Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) and Western Province Professional Rugby (Pty) Ltd or the devastating defeats  – one thing is sure Newlands is not closing anytime soon.

The grand Dame hosted the final match of the Under20 International Series between the Junior Springboks and Argentina last month.

WP’s last outing at the iconic stadium was a Currie Cup semi-final defeat to the Sharks in January of this year.

Since then, John Dobson’s men have used Cape Town Stadium their new home turf.

The WP are scheduled to host the Bulls this weekend at the stadium in Round eight of the Currie Cup.

However, with the second and third Test of the series between South Africa and British and Irish Lions moved to Cape Town following the Covid-19 outbreak and looting in Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal, the Cape Town stadium is unavailable.

Consequently, the North-South derby could now be played at Newlands.

“It seems like the match might be moved to Newlands,” Bulls director of Rugby Jake White told reporters after their win over the Lions at Loftus Versfeld.

“Due to the Test match at Cape Town Stadium, we might have another chance to play at Newlands which is fantastic for us as Bulls,”

White also revealed that Marcell Coetzee, Jacques du Plessis and Nizaam Carr will be available for selection.
