Cameron from Queenstown to captain Paul Roos

Captain's profile

Cameron Peverett moved from Queenstown to Cape Town and now is the captain of historic Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch.

Cameron Peverett was at Queen's College in Queenstown when he decided that it would be better to move to Cape Town. His father, who owns his own construction company moved the family from the Western Cape to its western corner, and in 2000, in Std 5 (Grade 7), Cameron went to SACS Junior School. The next year he started at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch. That means that he has been to three of South Africa's oldest and most famous schools.

This year he captains Paul Roos in Bloemfontein, part of a great rugby tradition. On Saturday his team – and umpteen other Paul Roos pupils – will travel in a 17-carriage train over the Hex River and on to Bloemfontein for an encounter with the great Grey College.

It is Cameron's first year as a captain and he also captained the Western Province Academy side at the Academy Week in Graaff-Reinet. The Western Province side carried all before them. He says: "It was easy to captain them because of the way they played. It was a marvellous team."

He was not the only Paul Rooser in the team. There were also Andy de Bruin, Danny Theron, Cobus Dippenaar and Gerber Basson. These were in addition to the players in the Craven Week side – Jody Rose, Allistair Siegelaar, Pieter Myburgh and Deon Viljoen.

Jody Rose is injured and Allistair Siegelaar and Pieter Myburgh will be playing in the Ellis Park curtainraiser.

Cameron has played "anywhere in the forwards" but is now and eighthman. He played for Western Province at the Under-13 Craven Week, then last year for Western Province Under-16 at the Grant Khomo Week.

Jacques Hanekom, great rugby schoolmaster, says that Cameron is a really good eighthman and an excellent captain.

The captaincy is unusual for Paul Roos as Cameron is only in Std 9 (Grade 11), but in a great Paul Roos tradition, the team chooses the captain and the team chose Cameron Peverett to replace Pieter Myburgh, the Western Province Craven Week captain who was playing at Ellis Park on Saturday.

The tradition of choosing the captain by team-mates is an ancient one. The 1906 Springboks chose Paul Roos in that way.

Cameron is fast and elusive, preparing the gaps to contact, and reads a game well.

His hero? He admires Schalk Burger but modelled himself on Bob Skinstad whom he refers to as "Bob of old".

He knows it will not be easy in Bloemfontein, especially after Grey College's defeat at the hands of Grey PE.

"I fear a backlash. They are a wounded animal.

"But if we keep cool, are mentally strong and go for victory rather than try to contain, I am sure we can win."

Edward Cameron Peverett was born in Queenstown on 3 January 1987.
