Herman Kemp - captain of Volkskool

We profile Herman Kemp, captain of Volkskool in Graaf-Reinet as the great FNB Classic Clash with Union High approaches

Herman Kemp was born in Graaff-Reinet,. He has been at Volkskool since Sub A (Grade 1). He is a loyal, tough Volkskool man, playing in the first team, as his brother did before him.

Herman is now in his third year in the first team, playing flank. Lower down he played centre and then hooker but now he is a No.6 flank, quick to the loose ball – a hard man (kliphard, as his coach says).

He says that he does not really have heroes in life but now Schalk Burger is his hero.

Rugby is Herman's only sport. He enjoys it and he enjoys being captain.

Coach Neil Schreuder says: "He's an outstanding captain – quiet but a natural leader. The others listen to him. In fact last year already they listened to him when he wasn't the captain.

The side has been enjoying a good year. They have won 13 of their 16 matches and the defeats were close and could have been avoided.

Herman believes that their defence is good but he praises above all his locks – Kalie van Heerden and Li-Ré de Beer.

He is looking forward to the day. "It's a big day. The guest houses are full and there seems more interest this year than ever.

"It's a day-long affair and then we get introduced with the sponsors and then the schools get led in singing."

And the result? "I think we'll take them, this year.

"Last year they won, and it was not at all nice."

Hermanus Kemp was born on 25 January 1985.
