Marcel du Toit, Maties' captain

Captain's Profile

We profile Marcel du Toit, the hardworking eighthman and captain of Maties in the inaugural FNB Super Bowl.

Born in Pretoria on the 18 August 1982, Marcel and his family moved to Cape Town during the mid-Nineties and settled in Bellville. Like many other famous Maties and Springboks, Marcel then attended Paul Roos where he matriculated in 2000. At school he was quite the all-rounder and played first team cricket, squash and rugby.

A consistent performer for the Victorians and Maties sides over the last couple of seasons and having represented the Western Province Merit A in 2003, Marcel has still found time to study. The No.8 is currently in his fourth year of study at Stellenbosch and is completing his degree in Value and Policy studies, after which Marcel is looking to extend his studies in Brisbane, Australia by attending Queensland University for a year or two.

Missing Intervarsities against UCT and Tukkies through a torn hamstring, Marcel is looking forward to the Superbowl where he would like, obviously, to get one back over UCT after their shock loss in 2004. But, unlike his grandfather, Marcel won't have to sacrifice his place in the touring side because of farming responsibities . His grandfather was selected for the Springboks on a tour of New Zealand but had to decline the honour because of farming commitments.

Maties first fixture in the Superbowl is against the University of Cape Town on the 17 July.
