Bishops vs St Andrew's at Bishops

It’s a wonderful match – the Diocesan College of Rondebosch against St Andrew’s College of Grahamstown – both private schools, both Anglican foundations – the same sort of people vs the same sort of people, and it has a long tradition.

It dates back to 1896 when St Andrew’s came on tour. But it really gained momentum after the 1st World War, despite the travel difficulties of the time. Since 1921, they have played every ]year except during the 2nd World War and the aberration of organisation in 2007.

It is the third oldest match that Bishops plays against education establishments and the second oldest that St Andrew’s plays.

It really is one of the happiest rivalries.

This time the matches are at Bishops, roughly where a rugby-esque game was first played in South Africa in 1861, just 35 years before St Andrew’s came to play 122 years ago.

Not so long ago, just one team would meet each year. There was a rugby match and a dance afterwards. When Bishops went there they would play two other matches, as St Andrew’s did when they came to the Western Cape.

This year, on Women’s Day, there are five matches, starting with the Under14s at half past eight. Travel is by plane, not by train or car, but, one hopes, the same sort of friendly spirit still travels well.

Season So Far

Bishops has had a good season, winning 10 of their 14 matches, and the four lost were to four teams above them on the schools Top 20, on which they are ranked 18th. St Andrew’s are on the strong pressure group just under the Top 20. They have won 13 of their 15 matches losing to Dale and Selborne. Selborne is the only Top 20 team that they have played.
