Iqhawe Week, Day 2
After the second day of the Iqhawe Week for Under-15 provincial teams at the Bill Jardine Stadium in Johannesburg, two teams have won both of their matches and a draw has meant that the Griffons are also unbeaten.
The unbeaten teams are the Golden Lions and Eastern Province, each of whom beat their opponents by only two points. Golden Lions beat Pumas 24-22, and Eastern Province beat Western Province 28-26.
Each of the close victories was decided by the boot. In the case of the Golden Lions it was a missed conversion in the last minute that gave them the victory while Western Province outscored Eastern Province four tries to three but lost out to a late try and 13 points from the boot of Wessie Odendaal
The Griffons won on Day 1 and this time drew 15-15 with the Leopards who had lost to the Golden Lions on Monday.
The Golden Lions will meet Eastern Province in the main match on Thursday, the final match of the excellent tournament, a match reserved for the best-performing of the 14 teams.
The teams were well-matched on Tuesday, which is a feather in the organisers’ caps. Free State suffered the biggest defeat – 22-5 – and are the only team to have lost both matches.
