Jenkins looking to record first derby win

Player Profile

We profile Greg Jenkins, captain of Rondebosch Boys' High School before their FNB Classic Clash with Bishops..

Bishops go the short distance along Tullyallen Road to play Rondebosch in the FNB Classic Clash on Saturday. There Greg Jenkins and his team will be waiting for them.

Born in Bloemfontein on the 21 October 1986, Greg’s family left the Free State and ventured south to settle in Worcester.

Starting off his schooling at Lanner House in Worcester, Gary then moved to Rondebosch Boys' High in Standard 6 (Grade 8) where he has played water polo during the summer but more importantly, hooker for the Rondebosch 1st XV during the winter.

Head of the boarding house, Canigou, and a school prefect Greg looks to continue his studies in 2005 by attending Stellenbosch University and completing a BComm Law degree.

His father Bruce was also quite the rugby player and represented Natal Schools before concentrating on his studies and becoming a doctor.

Although Greg has failed to beat Bishops through his high school years, it will not be the first time that Rondebosch have been the underdogs for the derby match. Bishops were shell-shocked in 1999 when an unlikely Rondebosch side won at Bishops through a last-minute try.

The season’s results mean nothing. The late winter has arrived and a possible change of form for Rondebosch in the southern suburbs derby this weekend.

Although his front-row is not the biggest in the league, they have proven to be extremely mobile and keen handlers of the oval ball. Other players that have grabbed the eye have been flyhalf Bradley Hornby and inside-centre and vice-captain David Banelly whose combination is growing in confidence every week.

Greg squares up to Bishops hooker and captain Gary van Breda this weekend and hopes to record his first derby victory, which will be made even sweeter if it can be recorded on home soil. Five years in the boarding means that he’s walked every inch of the field and will need that knowledge for this weekend’s FNB Classic Clash.
