St Andrew's College Play Queen's College

A very determined Queen’s College rugby club arrived in Grahamstown to avenge last year’s losses. They were rewarded for this determination with wins over our Under-14s, Under-15As and a narrow 2 point victory over our Under-16As.

St Andrew’s managed to bounce back with solid wins from the Under-15B and Cs, Under-16Cs and another fine performance from our Under-16B team winning 36 -17, this takes them to an impressive 11 wins from 12 games. Well done to the Roosters.

The seniors took control of the day with big wins for the 5ths, 4ths, 3rds and a narrow win for the 2nds. Some of the highlights of the day were: the win from the Under-15Cs, Murray Wilsons 20 points, the 1 point win for the Under-15Bs, The excellent spirit rekindled in the ‘wit kouse’ 5th team and the 1st XV finishing their last game on Lower Field with all their grade 12s.

The St Andrew’s 1st XV got back to winning ways in convincing fashion with a 57-19 win against Queen’s College.

Matthew Hillary opened the scoring for College after good continuity from the whole team and a good break by flyhalf Guy Rushmere. A try to fullback Ryan Ford, which was converted by Wilson took College into an early 14-0 lead.

Queen’s did not back down however and scored a try of their own after good handling and pace by their backline to narrow the deficit to 14-5. A penalty to Wilson extended the lead to 17-5 before the St Andrew’s hooker Chris Poole stormed down the touchline to score and see College 24-5 in front. Queen’s again hit back and half-time saw the game in the balance at 24-12.

St Andrew’s were not going to be denied a victory in their last home fixture of the season however and further tries to Poole, Wilson, Basi Malesu, Anthony More and Charlie Fleming saw the home side dominate proceedings and end up comfortable winners.
