Wild Wind Draw at Bishops

A powerful northwester blew wildly down the Piley Rees field when Bishops and Rondebosch battled against the elements and each other, and ended in a 10-all draw.

Luckily the rain stopped when the first whistle sounded, for there was a crowd of thousands about the field.

It was an all-out affair in which it was probably easier to defend than attack. But it was gripping nonetheless, the drawing points coming just two minutes from the end. And then Rondebosch came within an ace of winning it.

Bishops, in white, played with the wind in the first half, which meant that they spent most of the half in Rondebosch’s half. Their attempts to score were mostly by forward pick-‘n-go which Rondebosch met with stern defence. It was only late in the half that Rondebosch attacked.

Active centre Victor Allen and pick-‘n-go got bishops over the Rondebosch line but the referee decided that they were held up. From the five-metre scrum, Bishops went wide le\ft where left wing Alex Jankovich-Besan went over in the left corner. 5-0 after 29 minutes, the half-time score.

In the second half Rondebosch had the wind at their backs, but it was Bishops who did the early attacking.

They attacked down the left and some clever play won them a five-metre line-out and set them bashing with Tim Sharples close and then fellow lock Ano Mtombeni scored in the left corner. 10-0 after 50 minutes.

Conor van Eeden goaled a penalty for a high tackle. 10-3 after 55 minutes.
Then Bishops attacked down the right towards the White House corner. They though they had scored but the referee decided that they were held up.

With time being blown away, Rondebosch attacked. From a five-metre scrum, it was their turn to bash with Johan Strauss prominent, and then Seth Christian forced his way over. It was in a good position and Van Eeden converted. 10-10 with under two minutes to play.

Rondebosch had the better of the two minutes after Thoubaan Gabriels kicked and chased. The ball was rolling into in-goal and he was chasing but pushed in the back. Bishops were penalised and Rondebosch kicked out for a five-metre line-out. They bashed and bashed going right but the referee decided that they were held up and ended the match.

A draw is not a common result between the two schools.
