Bok scrumhalf boost for Province?

INJURY UPDATE: Western Province lost another scrumhalf to injury ahead of their Currie Cup Final against the Sharks at Newlands on Saturday.

Scrumhalf Paul de Wet picked up an ankle injury after coming on as a substitute during WP’s 35-32 extra-time semifinal win over the Blue Bulls. He is unlikely to feature in Province’s matchday 23 this coming weekend.

Province will be hoping to have experienced scrumhalf Jano Vermaak back for the Final after he missed WP’s last two matches with a hand injury. Western Province assistant coach Dawie Snyman said the 33-year-old Springbok will be given as much time as possible to recover ahead of Saturday.

If Vermaak is unable to play, Justin Phillips would feature in the matchday 23

In Vermaak’s place, Herschel Jantjies has worn the No.9 jersey and Snyman believes the 22-year-old has handled the pressure well so far.

“I think it has been a great season for Herschel,” said Snyman.

“He has done his part when he had the opportunity. We got full confidence in him if he has to do the job.

“This weekend [against the Bulls] he experienced a bit of pressure and that will definitely help him. We will work on that type of stuff throughout the week.

“We are happy where Herschel is, but it is not just about Herschel, it is about the guys around him that will have to give him the right information.”
