CURRIE CUP REACTION: The impending departure of John Mitchell to England next month will not detract the Blue Bulls from their stated goal of wanting to play an expansive game.
The Bulls defeated the Free State Cheetahs 34-12 in Bloemfontein in a game of two halves – the teams being level 7-all at the break, before the Bulls raced clear after the break.
The final tally of four tries to two is an indication that the Bulls are not going to return to the more inhibited approach that marked their game for many years.
Coach Pote Human said Mitchell had put some “great structures” in place.
“It [wanting to score tries] is something John Mitchell started when he arrived here [in Pretoria],”Human said after his team’s win last Friday.
“I believe we are building on that,” the Bulls coach said, adding: “The players are enjoying it.”
He added that their first-up win suggests there is a good base for the rest of the season.
“We know it is just the first of six matches, but it is giving us hope for the rest of the season.
“To get five points away from home is awesome for us.
“We can still improve a lot,” Human said, adding that the players were a bit cautious in the first half, before throwing caution to the wind after the break.
The Bulls have just one injury concern.
Lock Ruben van Heerden suffered concussion in the win over the Cheetahs and will miss next week’s match against the Sharks in Durban.
