According to a South African Afrikaans Newspaper NetWerk24, regular skipper Ruan Botha has signed a short-term contract with Japanese Top League club Kubota Spears.

The lock will link up with Springbok Duane Vermeulen, who joined the side in June 2018.

Former Bulls coach Frans Ludeke is the current head coach of the Kubota Spears.

Botha’s deal means that he will miss the Currie Cup season.

Botha, along with lock Stephan Lewies (Kamaishi Seawaves) and loose forward Philip van der Walt (Canon Eagles), will return to the Sharks ahead of next year’s Super Rugby competition.
