WP tackle Lions into submission

SHARE

WP was forced to defend for long periods of the encounter and thrived on the counter-attack, where they punished the Lions. The home side bagged three tries either side of half-time to secure the bonus point victory.

The Golden Lions were in control of possession from the kick-off as they tried to bash their way through WP's defence. However, despite maintaining possession for a number of phases, they were unable to get into the home side's 22.

Jaco van der Walt missed a penalty attempt in the opening five minute from about 47 metres after the Golden Lions dominated the home side at scrum time. It took the visitors nine minutes to get into WP's 22, when fullback Sarel Marais failed to collect a high ball, knocking on in the process.

The ensuing scrum was solid and a simple set play saw the Golden Lions create an overlap but the final pass failed to go to hand and WP were let off the hook.

The opening points of the game came completely against the run of play as Huw Jones charged down an attempted clearance kick by Antony Volmink. The ball lodged itself in Jones' arms and the centre trotted over for the easy score. Marais popped over the conversion to hand the home side a 70 lead after 17 minutes.

The Golden Lions were on the board three minutes later though as Van der Walt made amends for his earlier miss. His kick at goal found its mark as the Golden Lions trailed 3-7 after 20 minutes. That proved to be their only points of the game though.

WP had their second try four minutes later as Cobus Wiese rounded off a flowing move as the home side opted to take a penalty quickly, which caught the Golden Lions ' defence off-guard. Marais failed with the conversion but the home side's lead was stretched to 12-3 after 24 minutes.

Damien Willemse added a 38th minute penalty before Jones had his brace on the stroke of half-time. A break by Dillyn Leyds saw him get his side onto the Golden Lions ' 22 before he was tackled high, however, his offload found Jones in support and the centre got over.

Willemse popped over the conversion but not before Volmink was shown a yellow card for the high tackle on Leyds as WP enjoyed a 22-3 lead at the half-time break.

The home side had their bonus point seven minutes after the restart when Seabelo Senatla raced onto an EW Viljoen grubber to dot down. Willemse's conversion ensured a 29-3 lead. From the restart, Nizaam Carr broke through the Golden Lions defence and got his side onto their opponents' 22.

He offloaded to scrumhalf Jano Vermaak to raced to the corner to score. Willemse was unable to convert as WP led 34-3 after 49 minutes.

The Golden Lions dominated possession from that point but brilliant defending by the home side kept the visitors at bay, despite camping inside WP's half and 22.

There was time for one final try though as Senatla ended the match with a brace. Leyds set off on another sniping run and got his side onto the front foot and inside the Lions' 22. The ball was recycled and sent to Senatla, who muscled his way over the line.

Willemse failed to add the extras but it mattered little as the home side bagged their third victory of the campaign.

Man of the match: Sylvian Mahuza was dangerous whenever he had the ball while Marvin Orie was busy. Nizaam Carr worked hard for the home side while Dillyn Leyds racked up the metres. Seabelo Senatla showed how deadly he can be when the given the chance. Our award goes to Huw Jones, who not only bagged a brace but led the defensive line perfectly as he rushed up to thwart many a Lions attack.
