His injury setback comes just a day after it was confirmed that Bok flyer Ruan Combrinck is returning from Japan to undergo shoulder surgery.

In a statement Ulster said that due to the "ongoing problems with the knee", Coetzee is to seek the opinion of the surgeon who performed his original ACL repair.

Coetzee has played just one game this season for Ulster, in the 42-19 win over the Cheetahs last month.

Before that his last game for Ulster was against Zebre in March.

The Bok flank, who has played the last of his 28 Tests against Argentina in 2015, suffered the latest knee injury early this year.

Coetzee lasted just 19 minutes of his side's 68-21 win over Zebre before he hobbled off.

He had only made his debut for Ulster in February, despite having joined them in September last year.

That was because of the knee injury that kept him out for most of 2016 and cut short his final Super Rugby season with the Sharks.

The South African flank was still a teenager when he made his first Super Rugby appearance for the Sharks in 2011, and a year later he made his debut for the Springboks against England.

An imposing ball-carrying breakaway forward, famed for his off-loading ability, Coetzee joined Ulster on a three-year deal at the start of the 2016/17 season after a short spell in Japan and had been a long-term target of the Ulster coaching team.
