The formal announcement is expected to be made on Friday.

This follows after confirmation of 'advanced talks' between Pro12 and South African officials.

In a statement Celtic Rugby confirmed that "advanced and positive discussions" are taking place with the South African Rugby Union regarding the introduction of two teams into an expanded championship.

"Given the proximity of the 2017/18 season start, a final decision on this potential expansion will be confirmed as soon as practical," the brief statement said.

Celtic Rugby is the association of Irish, Welsh, Scottish and Italian unions, which runs the Pro12 competition from September to May each Northern Hemisphere season.

There has been numerous reports that two South African franchises will joining the Pro12.

The Cheetahs and Southern Kings, the two SA teams that have been axed from Super Rugby, have been short-listed as the franchises to head north.
