Oosthuizen a concern for Boks

The Springboks – after back-to-back victories over Los Pumas, 37-15 in Port Elizabeth and 41-23 in Salta at the weekend – will go on a short midweek break before they reassemble on Friday, September 1.

The team will fly out to Perth where they meet Australia on September 9, before heading New Zealand where they will take on All Blacks in Albany on September 16.

However, they may have to make the trip across the Indian Ocean without the services of Oosthuizen.

The seasoned prop will undergo a scan to determine the extent of the rib injury he sustained against Argentina in Salta at the weekend.

Oosthuizen left the field in the second half of the five-tries-to-two bonus-point victory that saw SA move to the top of the Rugby Champion standings.

He was replaced by Trevor Nyakane.

The Boks already have five other props in the squad – Ruan Dreyer, Lizo Gqoboka, Steven Kitshoff, Tendai Mtawarira and Nyakane.

Dreyer and Nyakane are the tighthead options, with the latter the most likely to start.

Gqoboka is the back-up at loosehead to Kitshoff and veteran Mtawarira – the latter the regular starter.

The Boks have not indicated if they will call up a replacement if Oosthuizen is ruled out, or if they use the versatile Gqoboka to cover both sides of the scrum.

The weekend was the first away victory since Allister Coetzee succeeded  Meyer as South Africa coach at the beginning of last season, ending six straight defeats on the road.

Success at Estadio Padre Ernesto Martearena by 18 points gave the Springboks their biggest win in the South American nation since a 39-7 triumph 13 years ago.

It is only the second time that South Africa, in five consecutive Test victories, have won by 15 or more points, scored at least four tries, and 35 or more points.
