England lose key duo ahead of final Six Nations

The duo seasons' are effectively over as the pair face knee surgery this week for injuries they sustained during the defeat to France.

Hughes is expected to be out for 12 weeks while Lawes will require 14 weeks of rehabilitation.

England Rugby issued the following statement: "Nathan Hughes (Wasps) and Courtney Lawes (Northampton Saints) will both undergo knee ligament surgery this week following injuries sustained during England’s Six Nations fixture against France,"

England are sat in third heading into the final round of the championship, a point behind second-place Wales and champions Ireland.

While, Dylan Hartley is set to lead England against Ireland after recovering from a calf injury.

Hartley missed the 16-22 defeat by France in Paris that ceded the title to Joe Schmidt's men, but defence coach Paul Gustard has revealed that the Northampton hooker has played a full role in training this week.

British and Irish Lions wing Elliot Daly has been passed fit for the match after overcoming a foot injury suffered in Paris.
