Super Rugby system remains confusing

All Blacks captain Kieran Read and outgoing Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd recently criticised the current format and have asked for it to reviewed and resolved before any thoughts of expansion are considered.

As it currently stands, conference winners are guaranteed the top three play-off spaces. This means that the Hurricanes can finish no higher than fourth, even though they have more points than the Waratahs and Lions.

The introduction of the system was “to reduce travel and increase the number of local derbies” but critics say it is too complex and can be unfair.
