VIDEO: Brumbies expect Lealiifano to return in 2019

Brumbies coach McKellar talks Lealiifano and Waratahs

NEWS: Christian Lealiifano might be uncertain about his future plans, however, Brumbies head coach Dan McKellar is confident the flyhalf will remain at the Super Rugby franchise in 2019.

Lealiifano will head to Japan at the end of the Super Rugby 2018 season.

The Wallaby will play in this year’s Japanese Top League Season for Shokki after signing a deal with the club.

Lealiifano, who has played 19 Tests for the Wallabies and has scored over 800 points with the Brumbies, had a spell with Ulster Rugby in the PRO14 last season and was due to play in the Japanese League until he was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2016.

The 30-year-old flyhalf has not yet agreed to return to the Brumbies.

However, head coach McKellar is confident that the flyhalf will extend his stay with the Brumbies following his time in Japan.

“I and Christian are always talking,” the coach said, adding: “I’m quietly confident that he’ll be in Canberra for at least another year,”

“But, I don’t want to go putting any extra pressure on him at the moment around forcing him to make a decision before what’s a big game for us.”

The Brumbies travel to Sydney to take on the Waratahs on Saturday.
