Wales and England U19s win

Victories in Aberavon and Rome

In the two Under-19 internationals othis week, Wales beat Scotland 48-10 on Thursday and England beat Italy 34-26 at Stadio delle Tre Fontane in Rome on Friday afternoon, a match which started in sunshine but was overtaken by rain.

Wales vs Scotland

At the Talbot Athletic Ground in Aberavon Wales beat Scotland 48-10, following up their victory over England the previous weekend.

Wales scored eight tries to one. Scotland were competitive up front but had no answer to the speed of the Welsh backs.

Fullback Thomas scored the first try after just two minutes. Rhys Jones converted. Ross Curle kicked a penalty goal to make the score 7-3 after 11 minutes.

After Jenkins had a strong run Thomas was in close support for his second try, also converted by Jones. Form a five-metre scrum, scrumhalf Robert Lewis scored to make the half-time score 19-3.

Early in the second half the pack drove prop Hugh Gustafson over from a line out. Jones again converted, 26-3.

At this stage the Welsh made several substitutions but the tries kept coming – first by James Lewis in the left-hand corner, then by Jenkins, converted by Rhys Priestland. Jenkins got his second before Patrick McArthur got Scotland's one and only.. James Lewis scored the last Welsh try.

Italy vs England

At half-time England led 12-10 after the forwards had produced rumbling which led to tries by Andy Saull and Hugo Ellis, the second converted by Dominic Waldouck. In between the two England tries Italy's flyhalf Giulio Rubini, with a great solo run in counterattack, burst through for a try converted by No.8 Davide Duca who also kicked a penalty goal in the half.

Chris Pennell scored England's third try, but Duca kicked two more penalties as England lost prop Tom Mercey to the sin bin. This made the score 17-16 to England,.

Tries by Oliver Dodge and Pennell and a fourth penalty by Duca made it 27-19.

Waldouck, usually a centre but playing flyhalf in this match, broke brilliantly for a try by Tom Youngs which Waldouck converted, and England were well ahead at 34-19. Italy ended the scoring when, with four minutes left to play, Bacchetti scored a try which the unerring Duca converted.
