All Blacks 'doing their homework'
Messam, speaking at a media conference in London on Sunday, said knowing how match official behave will be key to the All Blacks defending their World Cup title.
The Kiwis start their campaign agains Argentina in London this coming Saturday.
"You do homework on the opposition, but also on the ref," he said, when asked about referees making different interpretations of the laws of the game.
"You have to adapt on the field. It might be different, but you must adapt.
"It is a different man's opinion every time.
"The core of rules will hopefully be the same. The breakdown might have a different interpretation. Some might see it more contested, some might not. It is about adapting to what happens on the day."
Messam said Wembley, the venue of their opening Pool C game against Argentina on Sunday, is a "great football stadium".
"Massive football games have been played there," he said, adding: "I was lucky enough to watch an NFL [American gridiron match] game there a couple of years ago. It is pretty impressive."
He said the All Blacks are "pumped up" to get stuck in, having never won the World Cup overseas – with both their triumphs having been at home, in 1987 and 2011:
"That is a challenge in itself," he said of their poor track record in World Cups away from home.
"We know how much hard work it is going to take.
"The best thing is the boys are willing to put the hard work into it. At the moment we are just focusing on training and the first game against Argentina."
