Argentina Test gives Springboks' injured stars chance to shine again
While the Springboks are determined to leave Buenos Aires with a victory, assistant coach Deon Davids says the one-off Test against Argentina is also a crucial opportunity to sharpen standards, build depth and reintegrate several returning stars ahead of a demanding end to the season.
With the Rugby Championship taking a sabbatical in 2026, the clash does not carry any tournament points, but Davids insists it remains a hugely significant fixture in South Africa’s broader plans.
What do the Springboks aim to get out of the Los Pumas clash?
“This is a very important match for us,” Davids explained. “We’ve got certain goals for the year, and we see this as a Test match that we want to win first of all, but also one where we want to set certain standards for ourselves.”

The Springboks arrive in Argentina having already completed a successful Nations Championship campaign, but Davids believes there is still plenty of room for growth across the squad.
“There are specific aspects in every department that we want to improve,” he said. “As a team, it’s about balance and control, consistency and discipline. There are always areas where we want to get better.”
Beyond the result, South Africa are also using the match to strengthen squad depth and ensure every player is aligned with the standards expected at Test level.
“As a group, it’s important that we have enough depth as part of our strategic goals,” Davids said. “The players who play this week, just like those who played in the previous games, must be able to perform at the same level and move towards the same standards we want to achieve as a team.”
A major boost for the Springboks is the return of several experienced players who have spent time on the sidelines through injury. Among them are Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth, Lood de Jager and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, all of whom are expected to feature against Los Pumas.
“It’s fantastic to have Eben and Lood back, and also the other players who haven’t played in a while,” said Davids. “We’ve got Sacha back as well. It’s great to see those guys wearing the green and gold again.”
The Springbok assistant believes the fixture offers the ideal platform for those players to regain match fitness and confidence as South Africa builds towards a challenging run of Tests later in the year.
“We know how much those players mean to the team and how experienced they are,” he said. “We had a very good build-up during our camp week and this is a fantastic opportunity for them to get game time, which is important as we build towards the rest of the season.”
