Los Pumas name two debutants for Australia challenge

TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT: Argentina head coach Felipe Contepomi named a strong outfit for their Round Three Rugby Championship clash against Australia in Townsville, including two debutants on the bench.

With the first two rounds of the Rugby Championship concluded, Los Pumas and the Wallabies will meet again this Saturday in Townsville in what will be the first of two matches on Australian soil.

Both teams spent the entire week in the northern Queensland city.

For the Wallabies, there is considerable anticipation about how the team will perform after their strong performance on their tour of South Africa, while Los Pumas will look to continue challenging themselves with continuous improvement and grow match by match.

Currently, the tournament is very evenly matched, with each team recording one win and one loss, with bonus points and points difference separating them in the standings.

The Pumas will return to Townsville, a city they last visited in 2021, when they lost 8-27 to the hosts.

Among those called up for this Queensland tour, Mateo Carreras and Joaquín Oviedo made their debuts in an Argentine jersey.

The last meeting between the two teams here in Australia was in 2023, and Los Pumas won 34-31 in Parramatta, thanks to a goal from Juan Martín González in the final minutes of the match, which saw Rodrigo Isgró making his debut in that clash.

Among the 23 players selected by Felipe Contepomi for Saturday’s match in Townsville, two players could make their official debut for Los Pumas: Boris Wenger and Gerónimo Prisciantelli.

Wenger played against the British & Irish Lions in Dublin, but he didn’t earn a cap in that match as it wasn’t deemed to be an official Test.
